A Doll with Down Syndrome

A Doll with Down Syndrome (54987 Bytes)

The idea behind the creation of this toy is to enable children with Down Syndrome to identify with a doll which reflects their image, thus helping them through play to strenghten and develop their self-esteem. At the same time, it is meant to be educational, a toy to be used by other children as well; it is suitable for use in Kindergarten, pre-primary schools etc. .

The doll has very characteristic look, capable of arousing strong emotions, quite unlike the usual "cute" dolls produced by the toy industry. It is hoped that, in time, it will help foster a better understanding and acceptance of handicapped people.

The doll is some 40 cm (16 inches) tall; the head and the limbs are made of vinyl; the cloth body is stuffed with polyester cotton wool and the face is hand-painted. It is available with hair of different coulours and lengths. The doll complies with European toy safety standards and is washable in a gentle 30° wash. It exists in two versions.

The doll has been designed by Tina Tombrock-Otto
